Vocational Training at Anchor House

Submitted by Hector Moreno, Educational/Vocational Director

One of the primary missions of Anchor House is to enable our residents to lead meaningful, productive lives after they leave our facility. We accomplish this by providing a vigorous program of vocational counseling where our residents:

  • are initially interviewed to formulate a plan of action towards vocational goals;
  • take a basic education test to determine current academic skills;
  • are taught basic reading comprehension and math, instruction in those subjects for the more advance is also provided. When appropriate, some residents are also offered assistance in attaining their GED;
  • learn basic computer skills, job search, develop a resume and practice effective interviewing techniques;
  • receive Diagnostic Vocational Evaluation (DVE) that helps them identify their strengths and clarify their vocational aspirations;
  • receive vocational training suitable to his/her needs;
  • is assisted in job search.
